BBC America

Well, folks, my brain has broken. I have been switching between BBCA and the Sci-Fi channel for like.... I dunno, twenty-four hours? (Okay, and the game-show network....)

And I have to say, SGA last night was love. I mean, yeah, it was generic sci-fi drivel overall, with several "HA! That was an episode of Star Trek!" points (Which are an immense improvement over last season's several "HA! That was an episode of Buffy!" points) But.... John Sheppard is so.... eh. I don't feel like cutting. Maybe next week.

Also, I finally managed to trick my spiffing cool computerinto connecting to the internet here at the great University of Maine! (I'm in college! YES! I'm also in DEBT LIEK WHOAS, but, well, with luck and an engineering degree, right?) So I'll be playing catch-up. Or not. Depending on my mood. After I do my essay for German.

Ah, yes, relating back to why I am posting: so, here I was, vaguely watching Torchwood, (Cyberwoman, in case you aren't hyper aware of which eps are airing when on BBCA) while setting up a torrent client and begging the network not to boot me again, when the guy across the hall stops in and sees Half-Naked-Robot-Woman. He decides to stay, and drags his roommate in too, and then the girls next girl.... Jen and Bryn or something, I dunno, we don't talk, are suddenly in here too, so, the five of us are watching Torchwood, happily enough, and I made popcorn with my illicit microwave of doom, and it ends. The boys are already planning what they're going to bring next week.... I don't get it. Torchwood is terrible, in that way that only people who like Torchwood can like Torchwood. I LIKE it, don't get me wrong, but.... weird.

I may have to tell them I have the whole series recorded on my harddrive, huh....

Also, for the record I like commercials.

The Last of the Time Lords

Um, I already posted much of this in pinkamethyst's journal, but... I figured I might expand it a bit and make it more coherent here... because.

It could have been better. Actually, after the first parts of the arc, I was EXPECTING better, but in the end, it was a lot like Torchwood's End of Days to me... sort of anti-climatic with too much emotional conclusion but not enough actual conclusion. Because really, the whole thing with Martha being all "Haha! Tricked YOU!" and the Doctor being all *GLOW*, was kind of silly.

A little bit of emotional stuff is okay. So the Doctor and the Master at the endwas good, and it was necessary for a teeny tiny bit of Jack going "Well, love you guys, but my guys suck, so I'd better go take care of them,"(But he kept going and going...). Martha should have just left it at "Gotta take care of my peeps first, maybe later." without the whole sob story about her friend, especially because (I think) you get a bigger impact of the Doctor being alone in the universe, because even Jack, who is like him in his long-life, has a family, and Martha, who has sacrificed so much for him, won't sacrifice her family for him. But it got too long-winded (yes, I know, pot, kettle) and I got sort of bored.

Oh, and Jack as the face of Boe? WTF!?!? SOMEONE PLEASE FIX THAT! *cries tears of horror*

My take: Jack gets tired of his wisdom being ignored because of his boyish good looks, so he does ten years of research on sociology and determines that a big ugly head in a jar that speaks psychically carries the most weight with people, so he has one created, and uses his psychic abilities (much refined after millennia of practice) to speak through him, and he takes the name from a childhood memory, and travels through time and space with it, masquerading as his own attendant and speaking psychically to people in need of advice.

(Eventually the Doctor will figure it out and confront him and there will be angst and Jack will be all "I didn't really mean the Master, you dolt, I meant me!" and more requests for assisted suicide, and the Doctor really has a solution, but he's selfish and won't tell, but they go off and adventure together for about 5 years, 2 months an12 days before they get bored and Jack goes back to being roamy and emo again. Without his clever organic creation, Boe.)

...
I'm back! Hope you didn't miss me!

ETA: notsobigheaded

I know this is an old topic, but seriously...

Cheyenne Mountain is a BIG MOUNTAIN. While its summit is not above the tree line, it is still, in fact, a mountain. You will not be able to see the entrance to the airbase from, say, Seven Falls, or the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. This is because they're on the other end of the mountain from the base entrance.

And yes, I would know. I've been there. I've been inside. It actually takes quite a bit of time to go from the gate to the Zoo, especially since you have to go down the mountain, then through the Broadmoor area (residential, with a snail's pace of a speed limit) and back up the mountain. Also: I'm glad none of you morons saw the "entrance part". I pity the airman who has the misfortune of meeting you.

(You, of course, refers to people who are not actually reading this.)
((sorry for the bad rant that's been done by too many before))

fic: Torchwood

I have to post this now, or I'll never remember to do it...

Title: Card Shark
Author: cavee
Rating: PG (language)
Characters: Ianto, Jack
Summary: Inspired by this. Number three, to be exact.
Disclaimer: Not mine.

Jack was happily engaged in a bit of gambling when he heard Ianto enter the Hub. He suppressed the urge to flinch, because he had broken several very important protocols by inviting the Strandmaenner here, and by betting a small fortune in platinum-group metals to boot.

Strandmaenner were barely evolved past their aquatic predecessors, and as such had slightly webbed digits, vestigial gills, and a nauseating symphony of greens as their color scheme. Green hair, green eyes, green nails. Hell, even their skin was green.

"Captain? I had no idea you had visitors. Shall I get some coffee?" Jack waved distractedly at him, glad he wasn’t going to mention which pesky regulations he may or may not be breaking right now, and put some rhodium the table.

"Who is that?" the one across form him demanded. This was also the one who was currently winning, so Jack smiled his most distracting smile and dismissed the question, focusing instead on this round of play.

By the time Ianto had returned with four cups of coffee, several more rounds of the game had passed, and Jack was losing. Badly.

He was also out of platinum group metals. "That’s it boys, I’m done for."

"You will not breech contract!" This came from the one who was winning.

"But I’ve got nothing left to bet. I can’t play the last two rounds with nothing, can I?"

"You have him." The guy who was winning pointed imperiously at Ianto.

"Uhhh. I dunno."

"Summon him. You will complete the game!"

"Ianto! Come over here, you can be my good luck charm." Jack snagged his wrist and tugged Ianto against his side.

"Captain, it has been my experience with cards that if you need a good-luck charm, it’s time to cut your losses and leave." Ianto vainly tried to disengage his wrist.

"Hmm? No, can’t. It’s called nine-round spar for a reason."

"And that reason is you have to play all nine rounds? What is the penalty for reneging?"

"Uh, well, I’m not sure you want to know."

"Ah. Good luck then, sir, I have some archiving to do."

"No, Ianto, wait. It’s round eight. Just five more minutes?" Between his hand on Ianto’s wrist, and the pitiful expression on Jack’s face, he knew Ianto would be forced to relent.

"All right boys. Deal me in."

Jack, happily, won that round. Certain his luck was changing, he put Ianto on the table again, determined to get back at least some of the platinum group metals he’d lost.

He lost. Ianto was going to kill him. He begged the other man, pleading and arguing, but he just kept citing the contract they’d made and Jack conceded. The Strandmaenner started to cheer. Jack said some choice things under his breath and kept his grip on Ianto.

"Well, it looks as if you lost anyway. I’ll just get to the archives."

"Uh, Ianto, about that... You’re really not going to be happy with this. Umm, you see, the thing is, for that last round, I was out of chips. So I…"

"So you bet me, and lost." Jack was surprised, but he nodded. "I really don’t think that you have the right to do that. So you’ll just have to explain to them that you don’t own me and hadn’t any right to bet me to begin with."

One of the Strandmaenner spoke up "It does not matter if violates contract. Now our contract."

Jack looked put out "Is that really so? And how are you gonna enforce that?" He tightened his grip on Ianto’s wrist and pulled him closer. The aliens all pulled out weapons. Jack sighed. "You could have just said so… Wait! Can I buy his contract? I mean, you said he had a contract with you now, which means I can buy it back, right?"

"Captain Harkness, you have no value for us. That is why we have contract." The Strandmann looked smug.

"Well, I suppose you’re right, at that. What exactly is this contract gonna involve here? I’m ethically bound, you see, to make sure this is all kosher." The Strandmann blinked rapidly, sifting through all of the unfamiliar words.

"Not required. We go."

"Wait!" Jack held up the hand not holding Ianto, growing desperate. "Say I come up with something of value. I’ll still be able to buy him back, right? Say a month, maybe?"

"You cannot be serious, sir. A month? How do you think I feel about all of this?"

"Shh, I’m trying to fix this."

"Very reassuring, I’m sure."

"Fine, just go with them then. Don’t make sure they aren’t going to fry you up and garnish you with a slice of lemon and some parsley. See how that works out for you." Ianto visibly paled. "Look, Ianto, I shouldn’t have said that, but please let me talk us out of this?"

"Well, sir, perhaps it would be better if you started speaking in their language again?"

"Right. Please explain the details of the contract to us. As a courtesy?"

"He will work for us. Our ship has many needs, and he is aesthetically pleasing to us. He will be cared for. You can purchase the contract at any time, as long as you have the proper funds. You will not be able to purchase the contract should we be forced to terminate you and him on basis of breech of contract."

"He says if you don’t go, he’ll kill us."

"That seems to be a compelling argument. Well, I guess I’ll be seeing you around then, Captain." Jack very reluctantly let go of his wrist and almost instantly, Ianto was gone.

"How the hell am I going to explain this to Gwen?"

***
It had been three weeks, and Ianto was starting to get used to the humidity. It was kept at a supersaturated level, leaving the ship rather warm. Which is why he didn’t mind his outfit, despite the fact that the balloon-style trousers were enough to make him feel like a member of a harem. He had just gone into the barracks for his off shift, when the door opened, allowing one Captain Jack Harkness entry.

"Ianto! I finally managed to get enough of their currency to rescue you! You’re free now!" He was smiling in that obnoxious way of his, obviously expecting to be lauded as a hero presently.

"No."

"What? What do you mean, no? I’m rescuing you!"

"I quite like it here. I have people to help me keep things tidy, I have quite a bit less to keep tidy and, best of all, I have ten in every 30 hours off. I haven’t been this comfortable in nearly six years, and you expect me to leave it all, at the drop of a hat, just because you need to have your self-image as a hero validated. So, no."

"Well, you can’t stay. These people are very fond of contracts and such, and won’t let you stay now that I’ve purchased you. Maybe we can work something out?" Jack gave him a hopeful look, but it was ruined because his eyes were dancing as if this was all some big prank set up solely for his amusement.

"Well, since this is about contracts… First, I fully expect to be reimbursed for my time working here."

"Done."

"And I want a guaranteed six hours out of 24 off."

Jack gave him a pained look. "Done."

"And Owen has to be in charge of the Tourism desk every third week, starting next week."

"Done."

"And I want a raise, starting three weeks ago."

"Really? I had no idea. You could have asked for one sooner, you know. Where I come from, people begged for raises all the time, and we all know you’ve earned one."

"Right. Oh, and you have to buy me a new suit and tie, because they disintegrated the one I was wearing." Jack’s eyebrow crept upwards. "Not a word. It’s all your fault anyway."

"I wouldn’t have said anything, but now that you mention it… I sure am gonna miss the Cute Suit."

"So you’ll pay for the replacements?"

"Done. Now can we go?"

"I suppose so."

Jack grabbed him and wrapped an arm around his waist before punching in a series of commands on his wrist computer. Instantly, they were back in the Hub.

"Well, that was fun. So… New contract, huh?"

"Yes." And, if Ianto smirked a little, no one could blame him, right?

AN: Thanks ever so much topinkamethyst for the beta.

Yay! 2007

Happy New Year! Yay! There were lots of fireworks in our neighborhood, which I think is almost cooler than the highly choreographed shows I always saw in the States, because everyone is shooting of fireworks at once, and it's all around, and it's like everyone is just really excited and happy.

Funny story though, about last night. My Dad and I were standing outside (in the pouring rain) watching these kids up the street do stupid stuff with their fireworks, when all of the sudden, the power went out! It was really crazy, but in a way, nice, because everything was so quiet (once people had run out of fireworks :) ) and instead of staying up 'til 3am, I went to bed around one-ish, because, well, without electricity, I couldn't use my computer.

Hope everyone had equally exciting nights! And, Gluckwunschen fuer das neues Jahr!

Oh dear...

I'm going to make a confession. I have just started shipping an ACTUAL PAIRING. I avoid [devoted] ship like the plague, and so need to have my brain realigned or something.

The pairing is in Stargate: Atlantis, and I won't elaborate, but my conscience is killing me. Tell me having an OTP is okay?

Eerily Disconcerting

I may have found another Atlantis Fan! Yay! Um, first I have to go out and buy the box set though, but I have wanted an excuse to do that for awhile.

Also, today is Returning Senior Day at school, so I keep seeing all of these people I used to have classes with and being all "ooh! Where'd you come from?" And, at lunch, embarrassingly enough, the two banes of my Physics class last year came up behind me, stole the stupid santa hat I had been forced to purchase by my conniving friends who were selling them (evil). And were all "Caitlin? What are you doing here?" and I was annoyed and said "Duh, I attend school here!"

Yeah. Also, I got my driving permit on Monday. I don't get my real license for two months yet, because in Germany you have to be 18 to drive. In everything else, the legal age is 16, but not driving. Grrr.

So, today, I'm just hangin' out in my Statistics class, daydreaming about John Barrowman, when the girl next to me (Her name is Mary, she likes theater, and we chat occasionally) starts talking about the Producers, for some reason, and mentions how she "hated John Barrowman as a blond" or something to that extent, and I fall out of my chair.

The rest of the class degenerated into a squee-fest, which results in a dvd trade-off -- Dr. Who for the Producers.

Yay!

If I'd have known it was this easy, (and, y'know, fun) I would have done it ages ago.

Umm, I'm a cheap-skate, so I can't show off the icon within this post, but it's the one I used with this post.
Oh joy. After such a long time of non-existence, I thought I'd pop in with a horror story...

Ramstein Air Base gets it's very own protest. How nice.

Goodness, doesn't she realise that American troops support the War on Terror? (Also, does she not know how far away Landstuhl Regional Medical Center is from Ramstein Air Base? I wouldn't walk that...)

HBP

My thoughts on, well, the murder, the murderer, and the motive

More Spoiler warnings:

S
P
O
I
L
E
R
S
!

When we consider who died and the killer, we must take into accounts of the person who was killed.

My first thought, was, of course, that he had faked his own death. This will likely be a VERY popular opinion in the future, so for now, I'm going to discard it. If you want to read why and how it was faked, read someone else's speculation.

My first serious opinion was that in Dumbledore's sight, it was more important that Snape live than that he live, in regards to the eventual defeat of Lord Voldemort. Therefore, in order to see his own plan come to fruition, Dumbledore sacrficed his own life in order to save Snape for some future duty.

I'd also like to point out that due to the problems in the corridors, as well as the fact that the already-proven Potions Genius known as the Half-Blood Prince probably brewed some brand new poison for that bowl thing, it was inevitable that Dumbledore die, and Dumbledore knew that, and knew too the same person was to be responsible for his death either way, so he chose that the murderer knew he had killed Dumbledore. To that effect, I see Dumbledore not so much trusting people as in "You'll save my life, I'll save yours," but in a more "I know exactly what you would do in these circumstances, and can trust you to do them no matter what." sort of way. This point of view portrays Dumbledore as the manipulative person we've always sort of seen him as, especially with his apparent behind-the-scenes dictation of events.

More later. Now? Food.

HA!

Although the US version is only 652 pages, but Mugglenet, bless them, told me it was 672 pages. Typo? Or maybe my version is wrong. I certainly wouldn't have begrudged them the extra twenty pages. I don't think anyone sane would!

Have fun people. I will be sleeping.

I'd like to add my expression of goodwill to the countless others circling around the net. I simply cannot bend my mind around the reason why some idiot would murder innocent people. Would-be attackers around the world sow how well the UK reacted when the US was attacked. Who on earth would think this would be different were the roles reversed?

My condolences go out to anyone who lost someone, and to those who will continue to fight the insurgents in Iraq, the guerrillas in Afghanistan, and the fires in London.

Fic! Mini-Jack almost a drabble

So here it is, a fascinating 95-word drabble that a guy named Luke so kindly finished.

Jack O'Neill's clone wandered into a bookshop, comtemplating existence. This was, for him, a common reflection, considering he was a fifty-year-old man in the body of a teenager.

Following his philosophical line of thought, he browsed through science fiction classics for awhile, briefly skimming Asimov's I, Robot before moving to the rest of the store.

Finished, he made his way towards the cashier. She greeted him with the same luminous smile she gave every customer. As he put magazines on the counter, Jack decided the nature of existence didn't really matter.

Optional endings:

"Hey, want to go out?"

"Ahrg, where's my damn wallet"

"What you mean 'ID Please'"

"I think, therefore I am"
I hate boxes.

I do so hate those brown, square (cubic, really), things that are an integral part of moving. Seriously. If I never touch another box again it'll be too soon. (Too bad I'm slated for grunt work again at the bottom of the hour. Sigh.)

In other news, Daddy gave me a six-foot table this time round (he says it's temporary. I disagree.)and it makes the heap of crap I usaully have look a lot smaller!

And now for something completely different:

Didja know that in Philosopher's Stone Harry gets the distinct impression that Snape can read minds? Yay for rereading and awesome foreshadowing! (Also, if anyone has figured out how the Order members communicate [see the Rumours section of her website]could you please tell me? I'm simply dieing to know.)

Because I promised...

Alright, I'm tired, rundown, and loathing the idea of ever moving again, but then I remembered that I had promised aesopfable that I'd occasionally post here. So....

I went camping with my Girl Scout troop two weekends ago. There was... camping stuff. Including but not limited to S'Mores, tents, hiking, and Roswell-esque conspiracy expos.

So, when we went to the campgrounds, we got lost and bribed a man with twizzlers to show us where it was. When we finally pitched the tents, I discovered, much to my horror, that I was one of the few, the proud, the people who actually read directions, and that most people look down on those of us who choose to exhibit this quality. Sigh...

When we were toasting marshmallows I learned that it is weird to not like smores. Aparrently you aren't supposed to eat one for tradition and than continue roasting and eating plain marshmallows. Instead you continue making and eating the nasty concoctions. Bleargh.

I fell down half a mountain.

Mystery Park was funny, considering that I am a huge sci-fi geek, and all the weird history thingies they explained away with aliens were giggle-inducing. The two that stood out for me were these Aztec alien-men that flew in a spaceship like a cross between the Moya and the Intrepid, and wore outfits that would make a Goa'uld scream "Plagiarism!" and the one on India that had weird outer-space cultures that flew in pods identical to the Apollo return pods. I don't think my troop enjoyed
it quite the way I did. Translated Mystery Park Page

Bed.

Anyways, the last week has been the busiest week EVER!

First, (well actually, most recently in time) I GOT A HOUSE! Yay! This family ain't homeless now. And its reallyreally cool. *Will elaborate later.*

I reread Dragonlance, as I was reallyreally sick of Sci-Fi.

I flunked my math final (okay, so I don't know for sure, but trust me. It ain't pretty.)

I had really wacky dreams where the Doctor (nine) had an American accent and was arguing with me about the inherent betterness of Leela over Romana.

... Yeah, so not too bad.

Except I also solved the EVIL MATH PROBLEM OF D00M!

Much cool.

More on Pope plus bitterness @ day

Well, I watched a lot of the televised moving his body to the Basilica. I think the color on my TV was off though, because the cardinals were wearing an odd orangey red, as opposed to the crimsony color I thought they wore (or maybe my brain was bleached?)

The whole ceremony was rather elaborate, and I enjoyed it immensely, well at least I did until my mom walks in and says "Why are you watching this? I thought you were an atheist!" Which was, you know, a little hurtful. And so I instead had fun trying to figure out which Saints they were naming. And in practicing my editorial skills by writing my third complaint to the PX for the awful conditions of their women's restroom.

S, I had a huge, awful cold sore today, and was greeted by a mornic "friend" with the words "You have Oral Herpes!!!" mmhmm...

I also took a pop quiz today. "Which three countries were not treated fairly by the Treaty of Versailles? What were their concerns?"
This prompt poses quite a few questions. First: "Which Treaty of Versailles?" "Well duh, we're covering WWI aren't we?" "No. Actually right now we are studying Musolini, Hitler, and Stalin, which kinda means we're studying WWII." "Well, I mean the one that David Lloyd George signed." Okay, got it.

Next: "I got Germany, but the only other I can think of is Italy, and they weren't treated unfairly, just ignored. Who is the third?" "Caitlin, Italy wasn't an Axis power! Why would they be treated unfairly?" (which is actually what I was thinking.)"So you want the Axis powers?" "Yes, sweetie." (SHE CALLED ME SWEETIE!?!) "But they weren't covered in the Treaty of Versailles." "Of course they were, sweetie." (AGAIN!) SO then I go and cheerfully make up shit about Turkey and Austria and quote the other treaties they signed. At the end, after I've read it out loud? "Why did you need to ask so many questions, sweetie? You did just fine!"

Strangle....
The Pope

Now, I blame lyssie for this, because she brought up the Pope.

Okay, so the Pope died. What next? Well, there will be a big ceremony that is largely secret and will cause people to look over their shoulders to check for Medici spies. Then we'll have a new, less battered, younger, (still out of warranty)Pope.

And why do we care? *Sheds fangirly, silly facade*

Whether you are religious or not, the Papacy is generally a very influential office in global matters. (What I don't get is why they have newscameras at the private viewing of his body?) The person who holds that office has his voice heard, and his directive followed, by around oh, I dunno, let's be safe and say a sixth of the world's population. Including (sorta) our own, dearly beloved, Head of State/Government.

Expect to see more on the news as Poland brings itself into the sights of global political fallout while they demand his body back. (Although I don't blame the Polish for not wanting to contribute to the popular tourist industry in Rome.) Why? Well, traditionally, the Pope is buried in Saint Peter's Basilica, the resting spot of the Rock of the church, who was martyred there. (The Pope has also been traditionally Italian, but I digress.) By demanding his body back, Poland would get to things: peace within their own citizenry, and a nice bundle of tourism money. (Remember, one sixth of the world?) Now, Rome, (a nice place, really. I especially like the remains of the forum, Pisa? Not so nifty.) and The Vatican City (way overpriced, especially with the 'blessed' rosaries) already have nice benefits from tourism, and Poland needs the economy, but, well, Italy is Italy, and, as I said before, Poland is poor, so there will be a lot of repercussion related to global politics in this.

*Sits back, eats popcorn.* Let the arguments begin!

I am gonna get the bestest b-day Present EVER!

So like, I was bored, and stuff, so I was like, figuring out what day
my birthday was on this year, and lo, but it was a Friday (my birthday
is February 18, so if anyone can tell me which 'Gate show airs then
I'd write you a nice ficlet!)

So, at any rate, I then tried desperately to see which "Gate show airs
that day, but I couldn't, so then my brain goes "Duh! Star Trek ENT
also airs on Fridays!" (which makes me sad because then gate and trek
will fight for ratings, but when you see my mini-- okay massive
spoiler, if you are even remotely interested in trek, you will tape
gate for this arc. Promise!!!)

So I wander off to my lovely home of startrek.com and find out,
through scrupulous (okay, so more like Andorria? Awesome! Spoilers?
Yum!) searching, that the episode that airs on my birthday is called
Affliction. ... I should probably put a spoiler warning here, because
I am so going to spoil you, and make you salivate with gleee! and go
squeee! and stuff, even if you are only a casual sci-fi fan. So, stop
reading here if you are chaste.

Spoil!

Spoil!

Spoil!

Spoil!

Spoil!

They're going to tell us How the Zebra Got His Stripes! Er.... Well,
more like How the Klingons Lost Their Ridges. Information:
http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/news/article/8695.html but
that's REALLY spoiler-y, so if you don't care about trek canon and
stuff, don't go there.

Love;
Cavee
